Charles Appel is known for his romantic landscapes and marine paintings in Tonalist and Impressionistic styles. SUNSET is an excellent example of the rich colored atmosphere and modulations of light that permeated his work.

George Inness (1825-1894) had the greatest influence on his work, although he studied with Francis Luis Mora (1874-1940), William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) and Frank Vincent DuMond (1865-1951).

Most of his life was spent in East Orange, New Jersey, where he was active in the New York art scene.
