The two figures in BUTTERFLY GIRL and CONTEMPLATION exhibit a sweet, serene grace. Although Irene’s work is haunting and tinged with melancholy, there is also a certain intensity which demands our attention and admiration.

Irene Deschly, as a young girl, showed such promise as an artist, that the Romanian government paid for her to study in Paris. She was a pupil of William Bouguereau (1825-1905), Gabriel Ferrier (1847-1914), Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921) and Eugene Carriere (1849-1906). She participated in the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris, winning the bronze medal. She also exhibited at the Salon des Independents in 1902 and 1903.
