Chee Chin Lee’s paintings are a reflection of the California Arts & Crafts movement. He borrowed his palette from Gottardo Piazzoni, with whom he studied for about five years. Painted in 1928, these pictures have the romantic and lyrical feel so prevalent in artwork of the pre-depression years. Best known for his landscapes and cityscapes of San Francisco, his style reflects occidental influences and shows little indication of his oriental background.

Lee was born in Hoy Ping, China, where he had his early education before coming to San Francisco in 1914. There he enrolled in Chinatown’s Congregational School to learn English. By 1918 he was enrolled at the California School of Fine Arts, where he was one of the earliest Chinese students.

During the 1930’s, Lee’s work was exhibited at the Oakland Museum, the California Palace of the Legion of Honor, and in Los Angeles at the Foundation of Western Art. He was a member of the Chinese Art Association, exhibiting in their 1935 Group Show at the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum.
